Abstract

|
Constriction ring dystocia is a form of abnormal uterine contraction, characterized by the formation of a firm ring which prevents progress of labour. It may occur at any site, and remains fixed in position relative to the fetus, and spontaneous rupture of the uterus does not occur. This is in contradistinction to Bandl`s ring which occurs between upper and lower segments, ascends in obstructed labour and the lower segment becomes thinner and may eventually rupture. The absolute diagnosis of constriction ring can only be made by intrauterine palpation. Constriction ring is not rare in Korea, so we must think of this condition in any case of prolonged labour, especially in presence of early membrane rupture and sepsis, and where oxytocin has been used. The incidence of constriction ring can by reduced by improved obstetrical care and prevention of infection.
